Labour Party Conference 2013: Achieving a Social State
Seventy years ago the Beveridge Report announced the pursuit of a new settlement that would dramatically change the structure of Britain for the better. With this in mind, Class examined what Beveridge’s analysis could teach us about society today.
Now, at a time when criticism of the infamous “benefits’ culture”, from politicians and journalists alike, is at its height this debate is more relevant than ever.
This is why Class is holding an event at Labour Party Conference to explore a modern take on Beveridge's analysis of society, expose and counter the dangerous welfare myths prevalent in the tabloids and set out an alternative course for a welfare state - or Social State - fit for a new settlement in 2015.
Speakers include
Chair: Tim Roache - Yorkshire and North Derbyshire GMB Regional Secretary, the elected Chair of the Yorkshire and the Humber Regional TUC and elected President of Class
Billy Hayes - General Secretary of the CWU
Wilf Sullivan - TUC Race Equality Officer
Jon Trickett MP - Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office and MP for Hemsworth
Hilary Wainwright - Red Pepper Magazine
Zoe Williams - Guardian journalist
