Tim Roache was elected to the post of the GMB General Secretary & Treasurer on 12th November 2015 after working for 36 years working for GMB members in a variety of roles and jobs.
Tim began work for GMB in the post room of GMB London Region in 1979 aged 17. He moved to GMB Midland & East Coast Region in 1984 as the Legal Officer becoming the youngest appointed GMB official at that time. Tim became a GMB Organiser in 1989 and a GMB Senior Organiser in 1999, during which time he negotiated, fought alongside and won a better deal for GMB members in every industry and section across both the public and private sectors.
In 2007 he was appointed GMB Regional Secretary of GMB Yorkshire & North Derbyshire Region where he put in place GMB@WORK and led the Region to 15.6% membership growth during his 8 year tenure. He also led high profile campaigns, forcing Yorkshire companies to pay a fair wage, defended exploited migrant labour by refusing to accept the undercutting of agreed pay rates, and terms and conditions of work for GMB members. Tim was previously the elected Chair of CLASS and is a member of the CLASS Management Committee and Advisory Panel.
