Tim Roache is the elected Chair of Class and member of the Class Management Committee and Advisory Panel. Tim was elected to the post of the GMB General Secretary & Treasurer on 12th November 2015 after working for 36 years working for GMB members in a variety of roles and jobs.
Tim began work for GMB in the post room of GMB London Region in 1979 aged 17. He moved to GMB Midland & East Coast Region in 1984 as the Legal Officer becoming the youngest appointed GMB official at that time. Tim became a GMB Organiser in 1989 and a GMB Senior Organiser in 1999, during which time he negotiated, fought alongside and won a better deal for GMB members in every industry and section across both the public and private sectors.
In 2007 he was appointed GMB Regional Secretary of GMB Yorkshire & North Derbyshire Region where he put in place GMB@WORK and led the Region to 15.6% membership growth during his 8 year tenure. He also led high profile campaigns, forcing Yorkshire companies to pay a fair wage, defended exploited migrant labour by refusing to accept the undercutting of agreed pay rates, and terms and conditions of work for GMB members.
